IN THE EYE OF THE UNKNOWN

He said to them:“It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority.8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Acts 1:7-8

There are many things that go on in our lives that we have no control over. Things that we really never think about until they are right in front of our faces. We just live our lives and never really think that something could really change. We never really think about the unseen until it is brought out into the light. Concepts about life that we never really think about until it disrupts the main flow of life. For example, we never really think much about our breath until we are unable to fully breathe. We never think about walking or running until we are physically unable to take a step. We don't think about the power of light until we are blinded or lose all capacity to see. The unknown continues to give us moments of anxiety and stunts our spiritual growth because of our inability to capture the fullness of life's moments.

One of the things that blows my mind is the power of a black hole. Scientifically speaking, a black hole is a place in space where gravity pulls so much that even light can not get out. The gravity is so strong because matter has been squeezed into a tiny space. This can happen when a star is dying. Because no light can get out, people can't see black holes. They are invisible. In fact the only way that we can see black holes is by using a space telescope with specific tools. But the idea that we could be going through space and never

know that we are speeding to our doom is mind blowing. But this is a true reality for us all in our lives. We live in the real world of the unknown because we fail to see the disasters that surround us every second of every day. We just cannot fathom the potential of being out of control and so we are ok if it is out of sight... out of mind. I think that that may also be a reason that God does not allow us to see everything but I wonder if we would live a life more in faith than fear if we were able to see the unknown.

We see this in today's scripture written to the people of Rome as the Apostles were about to have their eyes opened to the unknown. Remember that Jesus had been crucified and had risen from the grave. Twice Jesus had appeared to them and as He was ascending He told them that they were not going to be left alone. Their eyes were going to be opened to see things that had been invisible to them for so long because their hearts were not ready to open their eyes to see the truth. The Book of Acts is the anointing of the Holy Spirit into the lives of the disciples and it begins to prepare the church to be born. No one could image what was coming next, but Jesus could already see what was coming. Jesus already knew of what was unseen and knew that it was about to be brought to life for the world to see and for the world to never be the same again. In the same way, we have the same abilities today. We have the same calling to have our eyes opened to the unknown if we are willing to step out in faith and rely on the power of the Holy Spirit to guide us. There is no danger that we cannot face... there is no situation that we cannot overcome if we are willing to fully open our lives to the power of the Holy Spirit.

Yes it is going to be scary. Yes it is going to be something that gives us a reason to pause and discern, but the real truth will be revealed and I hope and pray that we are ready to see what we cannot see. As Peter was able to give birth to the church, no one would have ever thought that this would be the vessel that God would choose to change the world. That was out of left field, but if God can use one that is so compulsive like Peter, imagine what God

can do for you. Imagine the opportunities that we could have each day if we were able to see with new eyes and step into the moment without fear. It is never easy to finally admit what we need but I believe that if we admit we need to see, God may open up our eyes to see the world in ways that could lead to the next great revival. Open my eyes Lord... let me see Jesus to reach out and touch Him and know that we love Him. Teach me to hear Lord and help me to listen, Open my eyes Lord.. I want to see Jesus.
