LOVE IS WORTH FIGHTING FOR
16 This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us.And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.17 If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? 18 Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth. 1 John 3:16-18
Today is the last day that we really focus on this understanding of the word LOVE and really dig into the guts of the meaning that came in the form of Jesus. We have been able to see the battle for our hearts, minds, and our physical presence in this world. We have been able to see a love that will NEVER stop fighting for every single part of God's Creation. It is one of the things that we never realize because we are surrounded by a type of love that comes in so many different forms. Whether it is in the form of GRACE that is broken into prevenient, justifying or sanctifying. God sees what stage of life that we are in and provides for us a way to grow through this love that is expressed in grace. God shows that this love in unconditional because it was not an action that we had to do first, but it was an action plan that God had already put into place before we were even a thought in the minds of our parents. God was willing to show such a compassion for a fallen world and continues to FIGHT for the LOVE that has been placed in our lives. God continues to battle with all of the other things that are in this world for our hearts, our time, our passions, our dreams and just our full love.
God continues to use the words of HIS WORD to show us that there is a road map that will continue to guide us out of the darkness... out of the shackles that continue to bind us and hold us in a place that separates us from the fullness of God's love. And the key to the shackles is not in God's hands but ours. God is ready and willing to stand up for us and provide a way out but we have to be willing to let HIM LOVE US. The battle sometimes is not against the world but against the lies that we have truly told ourselves of who is really in control. The battle for our hearts is not a battle from the world, the world will just continue to provide distractions, lies, frustrations, inabilities. But the true battle is for us to let go and
stop fighting for control of our hearts from God. We just don't realize that we have this power and God is giving us the choice to release our hearts but we don't want to. We like the darkness. We like control. We like to find excuses instead of truly standing tall and realizing that there is so much more that we have been called to in this life. God is ready and battling to break through the walls that we have built around us to protect ourselves from really owning up to the fact that we know we have failed... we know we sin... but if we can hide it than no one will know just how far we have stepped out of the light. But the TRUTH we have to realize is that God already has seen it all and knows all the deepest struggles and secrets and HE is still fighting for our LOVE.
Once again we run into words that are written by John the "Beloved Disciple" as one who was able to see the battle first hand through His words today. Let's look at the words again, "This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth." We are called to not just talk about this love, but to action... to live into the LOVE that God stepped into the darkness with first. It was through God's actions that we are able to experience love. It is nothing that we did, but it is a call and a challenge to RESPOND to the free gift that has been given to us. It is the same as knowing the answer to the final question to the final exam and just not wanting to give the answer. WE know what we are supposed to do. We know what the expectations are for us and yet we still want to fight with God for the control over our lives. God is never going to stop fighting for us, but the impact and influence that we may have to help others will be limited with every day that continues to pass by and we don't receive the LOVE and LET GO of the control we have over our hearts. I love the last part that John writes when he says that we are not suppose to love with just words but to live it out in all of its' fullness through actions. Love is a verb, an ACTION WORD, and that is why it is worth fighting for.
As we look at the end of the second week of Advent, we have taken EVERY day this week and dissected it from many different angles, but the reality is that LOVE is simple. It's the follow through that we don't actually like to do. It is simply put, letting go and letting GOD. We die to self and take up our cross and follow. It is never about us but Jesus that lives in us. It is about the LOVE that the world needs to see through the TESTIMONY of our story... of our battle to finally realize God's Love that has been there from the beginning. Every step that we take is either one towards or away from the LOVE of God. I really don't understand where we ever got the notion that we can defeat God. I don't know where we became so arrogant to believe that we have the cognizance to truly go up against the CREATOR of all
things and let God know how we are going to live our lives. It just blows my mind and makes me so humble and thankful that God looks past that pride that we present before Him and He still battles and loves us. I don't understand how an unconditional God is so willing to fight for people who live in such a conditional world. Thank you God. Thank you for sending into our darkness the LIGHT of LOVE that helps us to see that you will continue to fight for our failures. You will continue to FIGHT through our barriers and continue to FIGHT even when we turn our backs on what we know is right and choose to follow the wrong. Thank you for fighting for ME and showing me a LOVE that I pray I can give away to every person that I encounter on a daily basis. Help me to put actions to YOUR LOVE so others with move past just the physical needs into a deeper connection with you. In ALL I am I just thank you for fighting for me because you made the decision that I was worth fighting for when the world is so ready to discard me every step of the way. This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us... I am ready to help train others to get into the FIGHT. WHO WILL JOIN ME?
