THE BODY OF CHRIST: WHAT PART DO YOU PLAY?
12 Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ.13 For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.14 Even so the body is not made up of one part but of many.
I Corinthians 12:12-14
Here is the real question of the day.... What part of the Body of Christ do we play? I remember growing up and hearing this scripture and every time I continued to question myself about what part would I play. Would I want to be an eye, or a hand or a nose.. I mean they all were very important but how would I be able to hold up to that standard for God. How am I able to be a part of His body and play such a vital role... I mean what if I messed up... what if I couldn't do what I was called to do? It always made me nervous and anxious to think about until I reached middle school and someone finally told me that we all play a role in being the body of Christ. One day we may be a hand...one day we may be called to be the feet of God and carry the Gospel to the world. Another day we may be the mouth of God and are called to pray or tell others by using our voices about the amazing life of Christ. I think that a lot of times we get caught up in the semantics of which role we want to play or that we could play and not realize that God is calling us to play ANY part in helping others to also become a part of the greater body of Christ.
One of the first lessons I learned about the body when I was an athlete was that the only way the body was going to truly grow was to tear down the old and allow the body to be stretched and cause it to grow stronger. In other words, if you have ever lifted weights for the first time, you have felt sore. Well the muscles in our body are being torn and stretched, lactic acid fills the gaps and once the muscles grow back together they are stronger than
they were before. Same is true for us as we are becoming a part of the body of Christ. We have to be stretched from our regular way of thinking and stretch our lives in such a way that
our old styles are broken down. The power of Holy Spirit helps to fill the gaps and we become stronger in our spirit walk. As each part of the body becomes stronger, so does the body as a whole become stronger. So regardless if I am the left small toe, I serve a purpose of helping to keep the body balanced and I must find a way to grow stronger in everything that I do if I want the body of Christ to be stronger. So as we learn to be a part of the body, we are broken down and then restored through the power of Holy Spirit. It is an amazing opportunity for us to see how our lives can impact the world in a new way.
Paul is writing to the people of Corinth and warning them of their lifestyles and the ability they truly have to step in and make a bigger difference in the world. Paul has been telling them to look how they are living their lives and warning them that the examples they are setting is possibly causing others to fall in their faith. Even in the way that they are taking communion, not as a holy remembrance but as a checklist item is something that is a warning sign of their inability to fully understand their calling as followers of Christ. They are stuck in the routines and fail to realize the important role they have of helping to show others how they should live for Christ every day. The same could be said for us as well. Are we finding ourselves just going through the motions because we have just fell into a routine. We check all of the boxes and we look around and see that the body of Christ has become apathetic and just plain fat from the lack of exercising our faith to help others. We are a unit, all made up of many parts that form one body. We all bring something different and unique to the table and that is what's so beautiful about the body of Christ. It is made up of a mosaic of people that are all working wherever they are to do the best that they can to transform the world for God. Some of us may have the ability to preach, or pray. Others may have the ability to sing or sit in silence with those that are grieving. Still others have the ability to know when to encourage and when to discipline. There are even parts of the body that know how to do break down crazy equations in such a way that saves lives through science. We are not limited by the amount of people who can make up the Body of Christ, we are only limited by people who are willing to actually step in and make the decision to play the part God has equipped them to play.
So today, I just want everyone to know that God created you specifically to be a part of HIS body. God may each of us unique and wonderful, but we have to stop looking in the mirror and seeing what the world continues to lie and tells us. We have to really step out on faith and realize that God has called us and given us a common purpose to make disciples for the transformation of the world. It is not an easy task, but I don't care what part I play, I just want to do all that I can do to tell the world about Jesus. Remember we are all created by God
and inside EVERY ONE OF US is a piece of God. I know that is hard to see and hard to tell sometimes based on the craziness and evil in the world, but what better time than now is it
for the body of Christ to finally step out of the silence and the places we have remained hidden and step into the light. It is time that we share with every person that we know and that we meet about the love, grace and mercy of Jesus. I don't know how many times I can say this, but it is time. Lives are being lost and the body is being torn apart... but just like I said before, if we are able to replace the tears with the power of the Holy Spirit, the grace of Jesus and the mercy of God, the body will come back even stronger. We just have to be willing to help the body mend after this time of stretching. It is time that we started fighting back against the forces of evil that are in this world and the only way we can do it is with ONE BODY.... ONE MIND... ONE HEARTBEAT... ONE FAMILY! It is time to rebuild the body and we need EVERY part to step in!
