THE DEEPER YOU DIG, THE MORE COURAGE YOU'LL FIND
2 My goal is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ,3 in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.4 I tell you this so that no one may deceive you by fine-sounding arguments.5 For though I am absent from you in body, I am present with you in spirit and delight to see how disciplined you are and how firm your faith in Christ is. Colossians 2:2-5
I don't know about you , but some of my favorite movies over the last 10 years had to be Pirates of the Caribbean. Whoever came up with that idea was a genius and hooked me from the very first movie about Captain Jack Sparrow. The character development was great, the plot twists kept me on the edge of my seat, and I really could not wait to see what was going to happen next. It truly caught me off guard and made me want to become a pirate and search for lost treasure. What about you? Have you ever thought what life would look like if everything you knew turned out to be the beginning of a new adventure that you were not expecting to happen? Would you have the courage to take the step off of the wall and dive deep into the ocean of uncertainty with the courage to dig even deeper to find the meaning of life? I know that may be a loaded question for so many of us, but I just want you to know that if we really are seeking the adventure that God has in store for us, we had better be ready to dig deep and take the plunge.
It is in the stretching of our faith once again that we truly see where God is leading us. The journey that has been laid before any disciple of Christ was not one that was easy. In fact, many of the disciples would have never imagined the end of their journey in the way that it happened. But it was not about the end of the journey, because they already knew where
they were going, it was the pieces of strength and courage they were able to receive as they went along the journey. Knowledge and courage were pieces of the treasure they were storing up in heaven where nothing on earth could destroy. They were watching as Gdo was opening their hearts and minds up to an entirely different way of seeing the world and the more they were able to dig, the more the true treasure was being revealed. And I just need to pause and let you know that the treasure being revealed was the final image of God that was being revealed through each of them. It was not a physical treasure, but a spiritual transformation that allowed them to use the courage they had learned to truly lay down their lives for the Gospel.
So look again at the words that Paul has chosen to use for us today. "My goal is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. I tell you this so that no one may deceive you by fine-sounding arguments. For though I am absent from you in body, I am present with you in spirit and delight to see how disciplined you are and how firm your faith in Christ is." See Paul was continuing to encourage the believers in Colossae to continue to dig deep and to continue to seek the true treasure of Christ. They were prayed for in hopes of their minds being transformed and spend to see the real meaning of the Gospel. In their journey the would eventually find the greatest treasure that was ever given to the world and this treasure was not and never will be hidden, but it does need to be sought after. The GIFT that we receive comes through the growth that we have in the tough times and the strength we develop in the easy times to dig more and more and more into the Word of God. ALL of the treasure that God has prepared for us can be found using the road map that He left for us to follow... the Bible.
Every answer that we will ever need can be found by using the map God has given to us. Now, I will say that the map may not give us the exact name of the person we are to marry or show us the name of the company where we are going to find our forever job, but it will provide us a foundational structure to know the qualities we are to look for in a spouse and the discernment to realize if we have truly found joy in our job. The map will cause each of us to dig deep spiritually and physically at times. The map will stretch us to go outside our borders in a way that can test our faith and reassure us that we are really capable of finding true peace when we release the baggage we have been carrying for so long. The one thing that the movies almost got right was the fact that X marked the spot of where the treasure
could be found. But if you have not already figured it out, it was an X which stands for the Greek word CHI which stands for Christ who died on the CROSS. As Paul said, the mystery will be revealed in such a way that we will have knowledge and full understanding that the treasure we seek can only be found at the foot of the cross. Yes, it is a difficult journey, but one that will dig into our lives in such a way that we will never be the same. I close today by encouraging you today to look at the map... the BIBLE. Some define it as the Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth. Others say it's the Book I Believe Leads to Eternity. But for me, it is the stories of courage, knowledge, understanding and freedom that gives me hope to know that my journey is a part of the bigger picture. The Map allows me to see the power of the courage it takes to lose self and find Christ in all of His fullness. Are you ready to seek the Treasure of Eternity... the first step starts TODAY.
